Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of acquired blindness. Macular degeneration is diagnosed as either dry (non-exudative) or wet (exudative). In wet AMD, new blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak blood and fluid. This leakage causes disruption and dysfunction of the retina creating distortion and/or blind spots in central vision.
Wet AMD is the leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 65 in the U.S. and Europe.
Our own Mark Chiu, MD was a Principal Investigator on this study as well as Drs. Wyant and Reddy as sub-investigators.
The drug was approved Friday, November 18, 2011.

On the weekend of November 5th, Eye Associates upgraded to the current version of NextGen Healthcare Information Systems Knowledge Base Model (KBM). The KBM represents the underlying templates or screens contained within our NextGen Electronic Health Records (EHR) system. While we have used the NextGen EHR system in our practice since 2005, we have consistently used templates that we customized early on to best meet our clinician needs. Since that time, NextGen has refined and improved their KBM. Being tied into the new KBM standard will enable us to more seamlessly participate in government sponsored incentive programs such as the physician quality reporting system (PQRS) and meaningful use (MU). Both programs strive to improve patient care through the use of automation. We will also be able to consider other NextGen products and services to further streamline our patient experience and communication mediums.
